Celebrating the Life of Vermelle Clara Wright
Sunrise: November 11, 1925 —- Sunset: July 13, 2020
Vermelle Clara Greene Wright was born on Nov. 11, 1925, in New York City, to Albert Leuton Greene Sr. and Georgia Wells Greene. She was the second born of six siblings.
She described growing up in Harlem, N.Y. as a very wonderful and exciting time in her life. She graduated from Seward Park High School, where she was the captain of the tennis team. After graduation, she attended City College of New York.
She married Marion Arthur Wright on June 20, 1948. One child was born from this holy union: their daughter Patrice Vivien Wright Tillman.
Vermelle worked for the Federal Government and then for a private company as a bookkeeper and public notary. An international traveler, she cruised on the SS Rotterdam and Queen Elizabeth II ships. She traveled to Africa, across Europe and to the West Indies.
She moved from New York to her property in Smithfield, Va., where she enjoyed living near her siblings and other relatives. Thirty years ago, she moved to Lawrenceville, Ga. to reside with her daughter and her son-in-law, Patrice and Louis Tillman III.
She relished the time that she spent with her grandchildren Lauren, Jeniffer and Louis IV. She was extremely important to them and had a huge influence on their lives. When it came to her great-grandchildren, she was a key figure in helping to love and raise Benjamin in his early years. He affectionately called her G.G., which stands for Great-Grandma. She absolutely adored Benjamin Charles, Emma Jeanne, and Violet Sophia.
For 27 years, Vermelle was a member of Christ The Lord Lutheran Church in Lawrenceville, Ga., where the Rev. Robert Mitchell serves as Pastor. She was an active member of the church’s “Gold and Silver Club,” serving the community with the mission of “God’s Work, Our Hands.”
Quite the senior socialite, she was also a proud member of “The Red Hat Society,” whose goal was to go out to eat often and to leave very small tips! The Lawrenceville Senior Center was another excellent place where Vermelle enjoyed spending time with her peers.
Her parents Georgia and Albert Greene Sr., her husband Marion Arthur Wright, as well as each one of her siblings: Novel Wilson Jr. (Harriet), Gloria Greene (Arthur), Alfred Tommy Greene (Eleta/Bernice), Albert Greene (Alma) and Vivian Greene, all preceded her in death.
To mourn her death, she leaves behind her only child, Patrice Vivien Tillman and her devoted son-in-law, Louis R. Tillman III. She also leaves behind her three grandchildren: Lauren Patrice Tillman, the Rev. Jeniffer Nichole Tillman and the Rev. Louis Roger Tillman IV, along with her three great-grandchildren: Benjamin Charles, Emma Jeanne, and Violet Sophia. In addition, she leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends to mourn her passing.
We will always cherish and celebrate her life, and she will continue to live on forever through our fond memories and through the amazing stories that we will pass down to her current and future descendants.
May she rest in peace eternally, and may her soul always know God’s Bliss in the Paradise of Heaven.
